Graphics Processing Unit – Graphics Processing Unit Failing?

What is a Graphics Processing Unit (GPU)?

The graphics processing unit is a device found in your computer that is responsible for displaying the visual image on your screen. A function of the GPU is to decrease the load on the Central Processing Unit of your computer. A GPU can be a dedicated graphics card or could be integrated within the motherboard of your machine. When subject to heavy loads or over clocked a GPU can be subject to strain which could lead to damage of the device.

How the GPU Fan Works

Most video card are equipped with fans to keep them cool. The driver software usually dictates the fan speed. The fan speed is adjusted by the driver dependent upon the pressure being put on the video card. This occurs because as the graphics processing unit is under a heavy work load it will generate additional heat and this in turn causes the fan to rotate faster to keep the unit cool. An example of when this is likely to occur is when you run graphically intensive programs such as 3D applications, high definition video rendering or playing HD videos which cause a heavy work load for the GPU.

Signs your GPU is Overheating

If the fan speed increases randomly or remains loud even when the system is not doing anything resource intensive, it can be an indication that the GPU is overheating. One way to rectify this problem is to check there is no dust or debris on the video card as this is a common cause of a GPU overheating. You can also check the temperature of the GPU using a temperature monitoring utility.

Symptoms of a failing GPU

Like any other computer device GPU’s don’t’ last forever, and the lifespan the GPU can be reduced if the device is continually performing to its maximum ability.

Intermittent Errors

Signs that the GPU is not performing optimally can be when there are intermittent errors on your computer. Examples of a struggling GPU include a slowdown in frame rates when using 3D programs which you didn’t experience previously. You might also find that the GPU can no longer handle the heavy load of some games causing the machine to crash while you are playing. – you could also get an error message when this occurs stating the display driver has been recovered.

Fan Noise

If you GPU is struggling to cope with high intensive applications you should notice an increase in the noise made by the fan. Visual Anomalies Another sure way to tell that your GPU is on the way out is if you get vidual anomalies on your screen:

Lines across the screen

Flickering images
Artefacts – weird angular shapes with holes in them.
Incorrect colours
A blank screen

Obvious Failure of the GPU

An obvious indication of a faulty GPU is that the computer reboots, displays a blue screen or locks up. This is most likely to happen when the GPU is under pressure as described above – trying to cope with the intensive calculations required for 3D applications, high-definition video rendering or other heavy work load such as playing HD videos.

Some Potential Solutions

An easy solution would be that the graphics card is not properly seated in your computer. Another easy fix is if the cables have come lose and need reconnecting. Also you might find the problem goes away if you update your video card drivers. Another possible correction could be that you have recently installed updated drivers which are unstable. Try going back to the previous drivers to see if this solves the problem.

Interesting Facts about Emails

FYI Here are some interesting facts about emails –  About 250 billion emails are sent every day.

Of the 250 billion email messages sent every day, 81% are spam.

It’s estimated that only about 6% of spam messages are actually opened.

Email was already around before the World Wide Web came into being.

The first ever email was sent in 1971 by Ray Tomlinson, the US programmer who invented the email system.

Originally the “@” symbol was used to signify that the message was sent to a person instead of a computer.

The most popular online activity is e-mail, closely followed by instant messaging.

Garfield the cartoon cat once offered a free email service.

The first spam message sent to multiple recipients was sent in 1978, not surprisingly the 600 recipients were not pleased to receive it.

It is estimated that it takes about two billion electrons to produce a single email message.

According to calculations made by Michael Stevens and Vsauce, a 50 kilobyte email message uses around 8 billion electrons.  However as electrons weigh next to nothing, 8 billion of them weigh less than a quadrillion of an ounce.

Why won’t the Keys on my Keyboard Work Properly?

Are you experiencing one or both of the following?

There is a lag between the time I type and the characters appearing.

Incorrect characters shown when I am typing.

If you are using a wireless keyboard the solution may be as simple as a poor wireless signal. Just follow the suggestions below to rectify this issue.

Your keyboard needs to be within approximately a ruler length from the receiver, move it closer to the keyboard.

There should be no objects between the receiver and your keyboard, move those speakers or any other item that is between the two devices.

Your keyboard batteries may be at the end of their life, replace them with new ones. The battery compartment is on the underside of your keyboard.

Have you recently added another wireless device to your desk or nearby?  This additional device maybe interfering with the receiver’s signal. If you need to keep this additional device nearby you can do one of two things:

Reset the new device to a different frequency.

Re-sync you keyboard and receiver.

The receiver signal will be hampered if you have a large metal surface nearby. You will need to either move the metal surface or the location of your PC, laptop or Mac.

You may have a buffering problem caused by other communications in the area.

Finally the cause could be that you are running other programs in the background such as a malware scan. Just be patient and your keyboard should function properly again once this task(s) are completed.

Is your problem that you have a stuck key?

If your keyboard is still within the warranty period and you have one more keys stuck in the down position you can take it back to the store from which you purchased it.

If your keyboard is no longer under warranty you can try to remove and clean the key(s) or take it to a computer repair business for fixing.

Before attempting to fix the key(s) yourself you need to consider and do the following:-

We don’t recommend that you attempt to fix the stuck key(s) yourself if it is a laptop keyboard or a particularly expensive external keyboard as you may cause more damage than good.

If you key(s) have become stuck after a liquid spill of a laptop keyboard there may be other damage to your machine and it is highly recommended that you do not use your laptop until it has been repaired by a computer repair business as with liquid that has leaked to other components of your laptop, if you continue to use it you will most likely cause even greater damage and possibly end up with a computer that cannot be repaired.

If you have a really thin wireless keyboard it is going to be almost impossible to replace and in this instance we recommend you purchase a new keyboard.

If however your keyboard is neither a laptop keyboard nor a particularly pricey keyboard and thus easily replaceable it may be worth a try to repair it yourself.

Firstly turn off or unplug the keyboard before you try anything.

Use a flat head screwdriver or butter knife to gently and carefully pry the key(s) out.

Clean both the underside of the key and the key’s slot with a swab of alcohol.

Gently snap the key(s) back in place on the keyboard.

If you have one of the longer keys stuck in the depressed position such as the Return key or Spacebar you will find a small metal rod under these keys. You need to insert this rod into the key and the keyboard before snapping the key back in place.

If your problem that your keyboard is typing in the wrong language?

If this is the difficulty that you are encountering you just need to change the language on your computer. You will find the choice of languages within the Control Panel.

History of the Internet

History of the Internet…Some interesting facts about the internet in its early days…

The internet was originally a military experiment in the 1960’s.

The first message ever relayed over the internet was “LOG” which was supposed to have been “LOGIN”  however there was a huge crash and the task couldn’t be completed.

The World Wide Web was launched 25 years ago.

The first domain name ever registered was Symbolics.com.

The first website to go online was in August 1991 – http://info.cern.ch.

The phrase “World Wide Web” was coined by Tim Berners-Lee in 1990.

Up until the 14th of September in 1995, domain registration was free.

Mosaic was the first popular web browser and was released in 1993.

The first internet banner ad was launched in 1994.

U.S. President Bill Clinton’s inauguration in January 1997 was the first to be webcast.

The reason the Google home page is so bare, is because the founders didn’t know HTML and just wanted a quick interface. In fact, the submit button was a later addition.  Initially hitting the RETURN key was the means of starting Google.

In 1996 the first storage device was built for Google, it had a capacity of 40GB and was built-in an enclosure made of Lego bricks.  Google at the time was still a research project and had a small budget, hence the lego bricks.

How To Fix Common Laptop Problems

How To Fix Common Laptop Problems

We have provided you with an article on how to fix common laptop problems. Majority of the fixes we have included are simple, however, they will not always solve the problem.

Before you call in mobile computer technicians or take your laptop to a computer repair workshop, we suggest you have a read below and see if the quick and easy fixes work for you.

Common Laptop Problems

Laptop Won’t Boot

A common reason for a laptop not turning on is an issue with the laptop battery. However, there are also other causes such as faulty hardware or software problems.

Firstly, check the battery. Check that the battery light comes on and if it doesn’t then you will need to check that the power adapter is securely plugged in at both ends. If this does not solve the problem, you may need to replace the battery.

If the light is on but is red in colour, your battery power is too low to perform a start-up. Simply leave the machine to charge for a few hours. If the battery does not charge, then try using a new AC adaptor. If this still does not work, you are likely to have a faulty motherboard and you will need to take your laptop to a reputable repair business.

Laptop Does Not Wake Up From Standby Or Hibernation

The easy potential solutions to this problem include;

  • Check your laptop manual as some machines have special keys to wake up the laptop.
  • If it is an older laptop, you may need to wait a while. Some of the older machines can talk half a minute or so to wake up.
  • Try pressing and holding the power button for at least five seconds as some laptops are configured to hibernate with a press of the power button. In these cases, holding down the power button as described, the machine will usually reboot.
  • Remove the laptop battery and the power cord. Wait 30 seconds and then replace them.

It is possible that there is an underlying problem that is causing the laptop to not wake up, such as a disagreement between the power management feature of the laptop’s bios and Windows. Try different settings in the BIOS. You could also check the BIO setting with the value configured in Windows.

Laptop Randomly Turns Off

There are several causes as to potentially why the laptop turns off randomly;

  • An overheated processor
  • A faulty AC power adapter
  • A clogged internal cooling system
  • Faulty battery causing overheating
  • An overload of power drain picked up by the power adapter
  • A short-circuit or open connection

Firstly, identify which is the cause of the problem from those listed above. You will then need to either replace the faulty part or remove the build-up of dust and debris within the machine which is causing an overheating problem. This is obviously not a quick and easy laptop problem solution, and if you are not experienced in laptop repair, we recommend you take your laptop to a repair shop.

Laptop Is Slow And Continually Shows Internet Popups

The most likely cause of this problem is that the laptop is infected with spyware. Spyware is a program often installed on your computer when you download free software or when linking to free music internet programs. To remove the spyware and return your laptop to normal operation, you will need to use an anti-spyware software program.

Liquid Spills

We have repaired many customer’s laptops after an accidental liquid spill on a laptop. The most important thing to do after a spill is to shut down the laptop immediately and undertake the cleaning and repairing process. After turning off the laptop, turn it upside down and leave it to drain for around half an hour. Then remove any leads, the power unit and battery. Allow the laptop to dry overnight.

Once the laptop has dried overnight, the next step is to remove the keyboard and use cotton buds to further remove any residue. Liquid spills may result in the need component replacement due to short circuits. Soft drinks in particular can also cause corrosion.

Laptop Is Frozen

Sometimes this problem can be rectified by following these steps;

  • Unplug the power cord and remove the laptop battery.
  • Wait for around 10 seconds and then replace the battery and reconnect the power cord.
  • Turn the laptop back on.

If you are lucky, the laptop will start normally once again. If not, there is something more serious underfoot and you will need to take your laptop to a computer repair business.

Laptop Doesn’t Run As Fast As It Used To

The accumulation of software, music, videos, documents and photos will slow down your laptop. Running a defrag may help in this instance to speed up your laptop. It is also recommended to do a disk clean-up.

A virus or spyware could also be the cause of a slow laptop. It is important to regularly update your anti-malware programs and scan your computer.

Another easy solution is to reduce the number of programs that open on startup.

Laptop Battery Doesn’t Hold Charge As Long As It Used To

Battery durability goes down over time and they tend to drain quicker than they did previously. A good way to extend your battery’s life is to allow it to drain fully and then recharge it to its entire capacity.

Another way to extend the battery life on your laptop is to turn off the backlight, operate the laptop in power safe mode and reduce the screen brightness.

However, after a while, you will need to purchase a new battery.

How to Fix Common Laptop Problems

Dangers of Portable Hard Drives

Dangers of Portable Hard Drives – We have had so many jobs lately from desperate customers needing to recover data, treasured photographs, work files, assignments, YouTube videos etc from failed portable hard drives that we thought we should inform our customers of the dangers of relying on these devices.

Firstly backing up onto a portable hard driver is not sufficient.  You always need to back up on two different devices – be it a second portable hard drive, a USB flash drive, another hard drive located in a separate partition on your computer or by using an online or cloud back up service.

Backing up on one portable hard drive does not protect you from loss of data…

Portable hard drives need to be handled with care.  This is especially so whilst they are powered and backing up your data.  For example:

  • A knock, drop or spill on your portable hard drive could mean the loss of everything on the drive; and
  • Just any other device, portable hard drives can fail of their own accord.

With portable hard drives, you get what you pay for.  Do not buy the cheapest drive available, you are only asking for trouble.

You are welcome to bring your non-functioning portable drive to us as we offer a hard drive recovery service – and we will do this for an affordable rate.

If however the drive is too badly damaged for us to be able to recover your data, your only other option is to go to a Commercial Data Recovery Specialist or Laboratory where they have Clean Room facilities (they even wear white lab coats and masks!)  If the drive is badly damaged they may need to disassemble the hard drive itself in order to recover all or part of your data.  The catch is that their data recovery prices usually start at around $800 and can go into the thousands!

We have also had unfortunate customers who have backed up several computers with years of invaluable data onto a single portable hard drive – and then deleted all that data from their PC or Laptop – only to have the portable drive fail on them!  So while they were trying to do the right thing and ensure their files and photographs, music, videos etc are safely stored, they find themselves looking at an expensive solution or no solution at all!

Always back up your data on two devices.

How Do I fix a Frozen Laptop Or One That Won’t Turn On?

How To Fix A Frozen Laptop

As we repair laptops all the time we know many reasons why laptops freeze and once you know the cause this leads to how to fix the laptop – or possibly consider the purchase of a new laptop.

Below is information that we have gained through experience and hope will assist you. If you need any more assistance, please call us at Affordable Computer Repairs and Service on 3397 1215 or 0409 974 707.

Causes and Fixes of a Frozen Screen

Insufficient Memory

Your laptop may freeze due to insufficient RAM space. It could also shut down and show the blue screen of death as a result. If your laptop has a frozen screen due to insufficient RAM, the easy fix is to free up storage. This can be done by deleting unnecessary programs and files that you have previously downloaded.

Other solutions are to defrag your hard drive or upgrade your machine with more RAM.

Overheating

A build-up of dust within the laptop can be a cause of the laptop freezing. It is important to keep your laptop dust and smoke-free. It may be necessary to open the laptop and clean the components. We don’t, however, recommend that you do this yourself unless you have experience in laptop repairs. A simple fix is to use a can of compressed air to remove any dust, ensure the laptop vents are not obstructed in any way.

Overheating can also be caused by a faulty fan. This is usually an inexpensive laptop repair, and we are happy to offer this service to you.

Overheating could alternatively mean that you need to re-seat the heat sink – again, we are happy to conduct this repair for you.

Virus

It may be that your laptop has a virus and again we can remove this for you for a fixed fee. Remember, it is important to keep your antivirus software up to date to help prevent your machine from getting infected.

How To Fix A Laptop That Won’t Turn On?

Quick Laptop Fixes

  1. Is your laptop plugged in?
  2. Have you got a loose cable?
  3. Are you using the right AC adaptor?
  4. Is the battery installed properly?
  5. Is the battery flat?
  6. Do you have a defective battery? – remove the battery and try your laptop with the AC adaptor
  7. Has the brightness on the monitor been turned all the way down?

Not So Quick Fixes

  1. Faulty power supply – you will need to have a new power supply installed
  2. The house plug point on the wall is faulty
  3. The removable hard disk is not properly connected
  4. The memory card needs re-seating
  5. The monitor or video card (which may be on the motherboard) is faulty
  6. The processor, motherboard hard drive or memory may need replacing

At Affordable Computer Repairs and Service, we always strive to find the most cost-effective solution to your laptop problem. There are many other reasons why your laptop may freeze or not turn on, and we have only listed the most common ones. As stated previously, we have plenty of experience in resolving this issue for our customers and would welcome your call if you are unable to resolve the problem yourself.

We will also always let you know if, in our opinion, you are better off purchasing a new laptop rather than having an expensive repair which includes replacement of several hardware components. In these situations, if the laptop is more than 3 or 4 years old, you are often better off purchasing a new laptop and having us transfer your data across for you.

Obviously, we always welcome repair jobs – that’s our business. But the utmost in our minds is the best way to serve you the customer and thus if we think you are better off making a new purchase, we will say so.

How Can I Get My Mouse To Work Properly?

How to Make My Mouse Work Properly

Common Mouse Issues

  1. Mouse Ball Stuck or Hard to Use
  2. The most common reason for mouse problems is that your mouse ball has lint, debris or hair stuck in the roller and preventing it from moving. This is a common problem that happens particularly to those who don’t use a mouse pad or regularly clean their mouse.
  3. Mouse Stops Frequently or Skips
  4. Batteries – A common mistake is replacing worn-out batteries. This uncomplicated task requires you to undo the battery cover and replace the current batteries with a new set.
  5. Metal surfaces – If there is a large metal surface near your keyboard, mouse or receiver, your wireless receiver will not work properly.
  6. Obstruction of objects – It is always important to ensure that the mouse and keyboard are in a direct line from the wireless receiver. If there is an object between them such as speakers, this can cause connection problems.
  7. Plastic lens – The tiny plastic lens on the base of your mouse requires a quick wipe with a damp cloth frequently to keep the mouse running and connected.
  8. Receiver distance – Has the receiver been moved recently, even by accident? In order for the receiver to work correctly, the keyboard and mouse need to be situated within thirty centimetres from the receiver.
  9. Surface – Depending on the surface that your mouse is resting on, it is possible that the mouse s not working properly. For the best performance, we suggest using a mousepad rather than glass, reflective or translucent surfaces.

Solutions to Common Mouse Problems

Reboot Your Device

Firstly, try rebooting your desktop, laptop or Mac. While this may not determine why your mouse is having issues, it might begin working again after a reboot. A reboot is often an excellent way out of resolving a problem. However, if this does not work, please see below for some other possible mouse solutions.

Connections

It may be possible that if you have recently moved your laptop or desktop. AS a result, you may have inadvertently loosened the connection to the USB port.

Correct Port

Double-check that your mouse is plugged into the correct port. You may have simply plugged into the wrong port, but at least it is an easy fix.

Mouse Ball Stuck

To clean and remove the debris from the roller, you must move the mouse ball to the lock position on the underside of the mouse. Turn it on an angle to release the ball. Remove the lint with your fingers or a soft cloth. To rid the built-up dirt on the mouse rollers, turn the mouse the right way around. Tap on it so that the loose debris falls out the mouse door hole. There may still be lint stuck in the rollers, remove this carefully with your fingers or a pair of tweezers. Replace the ball back into the mouse by gently relocking the ball once all debris is cleaned.

Mouse TouchPad

Some laptops have a disable button just above the mouse touchpad. It may not be working if this button has been depressed. This may be a case of merely pressing the disable button once for your mouse to start working again. It is important to remember to only push this button once as if you do it twice by mistake, you could deactivate the mouse.

RAM

Insufficient RAM space could be the reason you are experiencing mouse problems. Try turning off some programs running in the background as well as ones you are not using. If this helps, then it may be time to upgrade your machine by installing additional RAM.

Installing RAM is fairly easy, however, you do need to pen the machine to install the additional ram. It may be also that your machine cannot be upgraded further as you already have the maximum amount of RAM installed. If this is the case, you need to do a thorough examination of your computer use. Delete enough applications and data to make your computer run properly or determine if it’s time to purchase a new machine.

Recent Update

A recent software update could be the cause of your mouse connectivity issues. We suggest tin this situation that you restart your machine and hopefully, this rectifies the situation.

Reset Your Mouse

Whether you have recently changed the batteries in your wireless mouse or not, try pressing the reset button on the wireless receiver and on the mouse. Some devices require the use of a pen to depress the button, please be careful when doing so.

Virus, Trojan or Other Form of Malware

A mouse’s poor or lack of function can be due to a malicious program on your machine. Whilst you may have up-to-date malware protection on your machine, no computer can ever be fully safe from malware infection.

Conclusion

If you bring your computer to our Coorparoo workshop, we can remove all traces of malware on your machine and add protection. We will then return it to you in the same condition as before it became infected as well as with your working mouse. We charge $190 for this service which includes cleaning your machine by running two full anti-software programs and installing some virus protection. This job takes about two hours to complete properly.

It may be that even after checking all these issues there is no performance improvement from your mouse. It may be that the device is defective after a long period of use and you will need to purchase a new mouse. Mice are now cheap to purchase and easily available, so this is not a major issue.
