How do I fix a frozen laptop?

Why is my Laptop Frozen – what can I do?

We at Affordable Computer Repairs and Service often help customers with this problem.  If you can’t find an easy fix to your frozen screen call us and we will repair your laptop for you.  There are many reasons why your laptop may freeze and we have provided the most common reasons in this post and what you can do about a frozen laptop.

The first step you should take is to turn off the laptop and reboot.  You must disconnect the AC adaptor, remove the battery and wait a little while – around 10 to 20 seconds.  Then replace the battery and reconnect the power cord and reboot.  If you are extremely lucky this could be the solution for you.  However if the problem persists you will need to find the cause so as to fix it.

Causes of Screen Freezing

Insufficient memory

If you run out of RAM you might end up with your laptop freezing – among other problems such as shutdowns and the dreaded blue screen of death.  If this is your problem you need to make space by deleting unnecessary programs and files including movies and music that you have downloaded onto your laptop.

You could also defrag your hard drive and lastly you may need to upgrade your machine with more RAM – again we can install this for you if you don’t have the expertise to do it yourself.

It maybe that you have a virus on your machine – we can remove this for you for a fixed fee of $190.  Remember you need to keep your antivirus software up-to-date to help prevent your machine from getting infected.

A build up of dust on the internal parts of your laptop can cause the machine to freeze.  It is important that a laptop is kept free of dust and smoke and it may be necessary to open the laptop and clean the components to resolve this problem – we don’t recommend that you do this yourself unless you have experience in laptop repairs.  A potential easier solution is to use a can of compressed air to remove the dust – also ensure that the laptop vents are not obstructed in any way.

Another potential problem for overheating could be a faulty fan.  This is usually a fairly inexpensive repair job which we could do for you.  It may also be that you need the heat sink to be re-seated; again this is a repair that we have experience in doing.

There are many other reasons why your laptop may freeze and we have only listed the most common ones.  As stated previously we have plenty of experience in resolving this issue for our customers and would welcome your call if you are unable to resolve the problem yourself.
