Different Types of Computer Viruses and Malware

Firstly, what is a computer virus?

There are many different types of computer viruses and a virus is a form of malware.  Malware includes all types of programs that are designed to infect your computer and damage your machine, possibly even to steal confidential information from you, compromise or disable your computer and/or destroy data.  Malware is the short name given to malicious software.

There are many different types of malware and the most common of these are listed below.

Types of Malware

Worms are pieces of code that use computer networks and security holes to replicate themselves.  They are able to copy themselves from machine to machine through computer networks. Worms both compromise computer performance and damage computer security. Most worms arrive via infected mail, so wacht what you click on.

Polymorphic Viruses:

These viruses replicate themselves by creating numerous identical files of themselves.  They also change their digital signature each and every time the viruses replicates itself meaning each infection is different.  This makes it very hard for less sophisticated antivirus software to detect and remove them.

Trojan Horse:

Trojan horse viruses initially appear to have desirable useful functions and are normal computer programs.  They are often sent to people or carried using other programs, they appear to be useful software, games or jokes.  In actual fact Trojan viruses perform undesired functions such as data destruction, compromising computer security, slowing down your computer and replicating files. Trojan Horse viruses may also compromise a system by creating a backdoor allowing a remote user access to the victim’s computer system by bypassing normal access codes.  While a Trojan horse doesn’t replicate itself it still compromises or damages computer security, they are however easy to discover.

Logic Bombs/Time Bombs:

Logic Bombs are programmed to initiate on a specific date or when specific event occurs – hence the name bomb. These viruses are very specific and sophisticated and hard to detect and eliminate.

Macro viruses:

These viruses infect macros within a template or document.  They are spread by documents and use other application macro programming languages to distribute themselves. They most often infect documents such as MS excel and MS Word and are often spread  to other similar documents.

Root-kit viruses:

Root-kit viruses are often installed by Trojan viruses, disguising themselves as useful system files.  They are undetectable and intended to allow third parties to access and gain control of computers without authorization.  The term rootkit comes from the Linux administrator root user.

Boot sector viruses:

These computer viruses attach itself to the first part of the hard disk and is normally read by computers during boot-up.

Memory resident viruses:

These are viruses which live in computers Random Access Memory (RAM). They are usually initiated from viruses which run on computers and then hide in the memory after it’s initiating program closes.

How do I get rid of a virus or malware on my computer?

There are many different types of anti-virus and anti-malware software available on the net.  However if you are unable to remove a particularly vicious form of malware, we have plenty of experience in doing so, just give us a call on 33971215 and we will ensure that your computer is cleaned and all malware is removed.  We charge a set fee of $190 to remove your infections, if the malware is particularly vicious and a complete system rebuild is required the fixed fee is $275.
