The evidence is out there, smart phones and tablets are experiencing phenomenal growth rates whilst PC’s and Laptops are declining – these figures are based on research from IDC on 2011 and 2012 shipment figures.

Aside from growth rates, the number of tablets sold in 2012 is catching up to the number of desktop PC’s (128.3 million and 148.4 million respectively).

Smart phone sales on the other hand are around 6 times the number of desktop PC’s (772.4 million and 128,3 million respectively).

Shipments in desktop PC’s declined by 4.1% in the year to 2012 and Laptops fell by 3.4%.

Tablet sales on the other hand grew by 78.4% and smartphones by 46.1%.

In terms of absolute shipment numbers in 2012 smartphones made up 60.1% of the market, Laptops 16.8%, desktop PC’s 12.4% and tablets 10.7%.

Some suggested reasons for this phenomenon:-

  • Tablets are no longer considered toys
  • Windows 8 has according to some contributed to the problem with the new hard to learn interface and expensive touch screens
  • Tablets retail at a lower cost of around $400
  • Portability is the key
  • Tablets  and smartphones are killing the laptop market
  • It has been suggested that people are hanging on to the current PCs for longer
  • Laptops and PC’s are not as innovative as tables with fewer new models coming onto the market
